The employees of Brookville Equipment Corporation gather for a photo in front of the first completed SFMTA car with Lou Maffei from SFMTA. San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) recently purchased streetcars to have restored and added to their fleet. The trolley cars were originally manufactured by the St. Louis Car Company in 1946 and sold to the Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company. Later, the same cars were bought by New Jersey for use in the Newark Subway; then 11 units were sold to SFMTA. Brookville Equipment Corporation received the contract in November of 2004. BEC is conducting the exterior restoration, as well as, making circuit and safety interlock changes. While all the interior renovations remain static from one car to the next the outside of each car will be dramatically different. SFMTA has chosen for the paint scheme of each car to differ; thereby making each car’s color resemble a different city. Each car will seat 47, and accommodations have been made for wheelchair accessibility. The restored cars will then be delivered for use on the F-Line.
